Pepperidge
Farm Goldfish®
The
Background Story of the Woman Who Brought Us Pepperidge Farm
Margaret Rudkin, who was
a housewife and a mother from Connecticut, discovered that one of her sons had
an allergy to commercial breads containing preservatives and artificial
ingredients. She then started experimenting making her own bread without
preservatives, she come up with the whole-wheat bread. With the encouragement
of her friends, family and her son’s doctor she starts her own small business
out of her kitchen calling it Pepperidge Farm. She names her ingenious new
business after her family farm in Fairfield, Connecticut. In 1961, Campbell
Soup Company buys Pepperidge Farm. Eventually after her trip to Switzerland in
1962 she finds and returns with the recipe for the goldfish snack.
The
Creation of the Wonderful Goldfish Snack
The
snack originally came from Switzerland and in 1962 after her visit to
Switzerland, Pepperidge Farm's founder Margaret Rudkin introduced them to the
United States. Margaret’s Pepperidge Farm is sold to Campbell Soup Company and
in 1962 she brings the recipe back from her trip; she later retires in 1966. The
plain flavor is called "Original", yet the first flavor was cheddar
and also is the top seller in the United State.
Goldfish
debut on Television
The
first advertisement aired on television in 1977. Since then they have created
many loveable characters that appear in their advertisements and on their
packaging. The original character to appear in Goldfish’s commercial is Finn, a
cheddar goldfish who wears sunglasses. The commercials tell the story of Finn
and the other characters meeting and living under the bed of a child; they must
avoid the vacuum at all costs.
